Tom Makovitch (b. 1990) is a sculptor based in Western New York whose practice investigates the architecture of belonging. His work navigates the hierarchies assigned to domestic rituals and environmental remnants, seeking a "handshake with the landscape" through site-specific mold-making and performative labor. By exploring the tension between familial ancestry and the reclamation of queer identity, Makovitch transforms ephemeral imprints into a lasting sculptural record of Anewed Permanence.
His professional practice is centered on the cultural archaeology of the region, with current research focused on expanding his site-specific surveys and performative installations within Western New York. SHORT STATEMENT Between the discarded imprints of the landscape and the permanence of everyday objects, an investigation into the architecture of belonging unfolds. This practice navigates the hierarchies assigned to items, places, and fleeting moments to seek a sense of Anewed Permanence. Through the pairing of undoctored organic materials and vibrantly masked resin casts, the work explores the tension between familial ancestry and the reclamation of identity. It ultimately questions how the physical remnants we leave behind anchor us to the world. |
